Intuition vs Logic

I throw open a perennial and unending debate which troubles every design student.... What is more important? INTUITION or LOGIC? Looking deeper, what is INTUITION? And what is LOGIC?
It would be great if all of you could put your thoughts on this onto the blog.. Do some research and let us share... I will put my thoughts as well (But first, one of you should start the discussion).

hello everyboby
well according to me these two words are entirely different intuition i suppose is gutt feeling keeping facts aside and logic is following the systematic procedure to explain something

being a design student i beleive that the combination would really do well . one should keep the logic and intution together .according to me working logically over intution would make the best creation ever

hello everyone,
The word intuition means to rely on your own thoughts rather than
relying on actual facts.
Logic on other hand needs facts and not fictions.
In relation to this i feel that, as design student i'll prefer intuition to logic because you can really work alot with it, as you do not needs facts to explain it and you can explore more and more.

As of my friends view i am also in the favour of intution as in our field u need to take immediate decision(sorry if i am wrong) which is the quality of an activist person. but the theorist , pragmatic and reflictive personality is equally important. but then i am a activist person.
lets wait for our questionnaire results............

in my view point both the logic a well as intution are separate things, and Comparing the two is rather like comparing apples to orange, yes, but...on the same time without a persons ability to reason, Logic and Intuition would constantly battle each other...Logic is not better, just different. Both strategies have their advantages and apply in different situations. Sometimes we need to use both. Sometimes we can use either one, because the problem is so simple it doesn't much matter how we solve it. Sometimes it matters, and we happen use the wrong one, which prevents us from solving the problem...so this was all i thought for the topic...but this tipic is interesting as well as confusing...
now lets wait and watch some more comments..so friendz keep adding your comments....

Great to hear from all of you! I believe that whether one uses intuition or logic will depend upon the context and situation that one is working in. Sometimes, the culture of a society is influential in the way the society thinks. I am personally interested to probe our own culture and way of thinking and try to develop a design process that takes into account intuition as a predominant influence in decision making.
I believe that Indian culture always relied on an intuitive process that was based on accumulated knowledge over many generations for a lot of it's decisions. That is why we have superstitions, rituals etc., which always puts into action one activity on the surface but reflects on a totally different reason when you dig deeper. This is also the reason why most Westerners find India a very fascinating place. Usually, you find people saying that there is no logic to the way this country works. I believe its true. Call us Indians lazy, clever or whatever you may like, but at the bottom of it all, its just that we are a very intuitive society!!
Comments please.....

intution and logic are two different strategies. intution is something we predict and is our ineer concious and logic is problem solving and decision making. Both strategies have their advantages and apply in different situations. Sometimes we need to use both.but i believe that that most actions we perform on a daily basis mainly use intuition.

hi everyone
i partially agree with sasi sir that India is intutive society but according to me it is logical as well.if we look at the names of monuments like hawa mahal ,char minar etc ,it's architecture evn the names given to them are very logical . for example we consider hawa mahal the name is given to it as there are many windows and char minar because of it's four pillars and centralised position . so i beleive that indian society is logical as well
i would m p ranjan sir to comment over it
thx

taking society’s records, practices, and other reflective social event into consederation the whole of india cannot be called a intutive society, like much philosophy Buddhism is very logical, it does not stop with theoretical pursuits alone. The content of Buddhist education is more like a university of theory and practice.Buddhism lays special emphasis on practice and realization.
The intuitive mind is a sacred gift,It is by logic we solve, but it is by intuition we create. ...
In this global society of rapid transformation and change to access our soul is to access the very nature of who we are. It is a journey within, ...

hi everyone
i think intution is more effective than logic making . intution is working with inner instinct and i believe that a creative person would look upto his /her intution first.
i think intution keeps upper hand over logic. and i totaally agree with sasi sir that india is intutive society .
as i also beleive in superstition in my inner concience . i totally beleive in the logic of working with intution.

Had there been no intuition, gravity would not have been discovered. Aeroplanes, Mona Lisa, Music....everything that has made our life simpler (if I may say so!) are results of intuition/guts.
Intuition leads to action. Actions leads to results. Results fall into some logical gramework. It has to. Human mind works that way.
Heart leads to guts. Brain leads to logic.

i think intuition combined with logic can do wonders......!!

HELLO EVERYONE,
LETS TAKE THE MOST IMMEDIATE EXAMPLE I.E. MATERIAL EXPLORATION MODULE,WHILE EXPLORING THE MATERIALS SOME OF US CAME UP WITH VERY INNOVATIVE USE OF MATERIALS WHICH I THINK WAS PURELY A CONSEQUENCE OF INTUTION AND WHEN WE WORK ON JOINERIES OR COMBINATION OF MATERIALS,WE NEED A LOT OF MATERIAL UNDERSTANDING IN A STRUCTURED LOGICAL MANNER, IF WE NEED TO JOIN FABRIC AND METAL, THAT NEEDS LOGIC.
I THINK THE RIGHT RATIO OF BOTH CAN DO WONDERS...

INTUTION AND LOGIC independently work well but
they work even better if combined!!! :.

well even i beleive that india works upon in intuitive thoughts. all the religion present in india are are totally intuitive they all have there peset cultures and traditions on which they are working on.they are not logical based,
But if we talk about design a design must have some logic and techiques so that it can be better understood. yes ideas can be intuitive but the work of design should have logical approach.

hi PIA Ma'am
this is not to offend you but to keep my point of view ,according to me if we see the examples you have given us like aeroplanes (but if we go about the structure of the plane it is streamlined and that creates logic because of that it can cross the waves of winds and can go ahead.) agian if we see the gravity , the reason was very logical to that apple fell towards the ground and not from ground to the tree (that was also the logical ) and if we see the music then in that case also the notes created are also logical or else the music will go somewhere else and would make no sense.
that was not to offend you but i wanted to keep my point
thank you so much

according to me Logic should be kept in mind but intuition should always encouraged....bcse intution is a form of a dream & v should remember always dreams trasform into thoughts and thoughts result in action!

hello everybody ....
to me intutuion and logic are equqlly important.to me intution is something wat u immediately feel like doing where as logic is a thought process where one think wether this thing is possible or not one takes a lot of time and thik over and over to justify your own idea and perspective.in designing you gotta have intution have an ability to express yourself in various ways at the same time they should be justified and fair enough..........this should not happen dat one starts building castles in air...so to me both play an equal important role in designing

Great Jayati! Good to hear from you. I do hope others will also express their views. Just one point to be noted.. Please try and use proper English, with full sentences and correct punctuation marks. That will help us keep this blog a high quality one. Don't forget, people from all over the world may be reading what you have written!!!!

Interesting juxtapostions of the same side of the coin. According to me these are two different states of mind. Logic follows Intuition asking if it was alright to be impulsive.

I guess emotions should not really be rationalized unless you end up being intuitive on a completly different platform...
